Masterclass by Rick Margitza
Aged 17, Rick Margitza surprised his idol Michael Brecker requesting him to place his autograph on Rick's transcriptions of his solo pieces. When he answered Rick Brecker's question, if he could play the music as well, positively, he was immediately invited for a private lesson. Rick's fame rose quickly. During his studies at the university of Miami, it was common to find him rehearsing with lots of fellow students listening breathless.
Meanwhile, Rick has released ten CD's under his own name. The first three of these where released with the prestigious Blue Note label. As sideman, he has made tours and recorded with outstanding jazz performers like McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Bobby Hutcherson, Tony Williams, Eddie Gomez and Miles Davis. When Rick met Davis, the first question was where the hell he had learned to play like that.
The masterclass was held in music hall de Badcuyp in Amsterdam. Topics discussed during the master class, were among others rehearsal techniques, improvisation and solo construction. After that, Rick Margitza could be heard in an intimate concert. He was joined by a trio, who especially met up for this occasion, consisting of leading musicians of the Dutch jazz scene: Jan Reinen on piano, Thomas Winther Andersen playing the bass and Joost Kesselaar on drums.
